GET TO KNOW
Friends of Grindstone
FOG was formed out of a simple idea and a seized opportunity. Who knew cleaning up two “points” on our treasured shoreline would lead to…
Friends of Grindstone (FOG) took flight in 2016 when efforts were made to do an initial clean-up of the points surrounding grindstone harbor. After permission was granted from the DNR, it was suggested that we come up with a friends group/non-profit so we could apply for grants to help further our efforts.
Many local residents and friends came together to provide the manpower and mental muscle needed to clean up the points. Because of the effort made by committed individuals and business owners, our beloved points now display panoramic views of the harbor, lake, and shoreline with ample space for recreational activities.
Since its inception, FOG has become a force for progress in Grindstone City. We focus our efforts on supporting Grindstone City, the harbor, and surrounding state land, area business, as well as improving the quality of living for residents and visitors alike.
See below for more information about projects we’ve worked on and are currently working towards, including how you can become a Friend of Grindstone.
Before + After
Point Cleanup
-
Before
Before the points were cleaned up they were neglected, overgrown, and eroding badly. The points were once 1/4 mile long and made the way for grindstones to be shipped all over the world, and without them, Grindstone would not be what it is today. It seemed wrong to let them go, and so the project began…
-
After
The points were cleaned up by local volunteers, including the help of our local heavy equipment operator, Ron Clancy, as well as donations from local individuals and businesses. We were able to do a job that was originally quoted at $156,200, for just over $17,000. Now the points offer incredible views of Lake Huron and offer plenty of space for fishing as well as other recreational activities.
Achievements
What we’ve accomplished so far…
-
Harbor Cleanup
The Grindstone Harbor offers a refuge and reprieve for boaters and fishers alike. It only seemed right to apply the same effort to clean up the harbor as we did the points. These efforts are ongoing.
-
Channel Buoy Lights/Markers
F.O.G. purchased new lights for the new buoys the DNR put in. The new channel lights were accomplished through private donations and were installed in the early summer of 2021.
Action + Initiative
Current projects and goals
-
Channel Dredging
FOG is currently working with the DNR to try and get the harbor and channel dredged. With the current water trends and lake level lowering, this project is crucial.
-
Shore Up Points
The DNR recently shored up the long point to help prevent more erosion. We recently offered to give stone from a local quarry to the DNR for shoring up other areas as needed.
-
Cell Tower
In the digital age, good cell service is important! FOG has connected with Agri-Valley Services and we are currently making strides to add a cell tower in the Grindstone area to boost the overall cell signal for residents, visitors, and businesses.
-
Infrastructure Upgrades
Working with the state to secure grants that would improve infrastructure in Grindstone City.
-
Recreational Improvements
We are working towards the goal of creating a space for a park with a pavilion, as well as a walk/bike path. We haven’t had the right opportunities arise just yet, but we are hopeful!
